Case Study – Currys PLC

Our case study – Currys PLC showcases a longstanding partnership between The DMZ Group UK and the renowned UK retailer, which lasted for five years until the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic severely affected many sectors, including retail, and it became clear that the contract was no longer financially viable for either party. However, the work we carried out during this period remains a testament to our capabilities in providing top-tier service and maintenance solutions.

The contract involved the cleaning and servicing of appliances purchased from Currys, covering items that were under extended care plans and warranties. This included a wide range of appliances such as ovens, washing machines, fridges, and other household electronics, which required regular maintenance to ensure optimal performance. Our service area spanned the entire south of the UK, covering major cities such as Southampton, Bournemouth, Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight, Dorchester, Bognor Regis, and other towns along the south coast.

To fulfill the requirements of the contract, we operated a fleet of vehicles, some of which were exclusively dedicated to performing the “valet services” for customers in their homes. These valet services included thorough cleaning and maintenance, with oven cleaning being one of the most time-consuming but rewarding tasks. Our team consistently delivered impressive results, transforming ovens to look brand new again, much to the delight of our customers.

On average, we were completing between ten to twenty appliance services per day, seven days a week, ensuring that customers received timely and efficient service. The scale and consistency of the work we undertook made this contract a significant and valuable part of our business. We estimate the total value of the contract to be easily in the six-figure range over the entire five-year period, reflecting both the volume of work and the high level of service we provided throughout the partnership. Although the contract came to an end due to unforeseen circumstances, it remains an important case study in our portfolio, highlighting our ability to manage large-scale service operations with professionalism and dedication. We hope our case study – currys plc reflects what we have stated so far.

According to feedback received from customers after the pandemic, the situation with the retailer became increasingly difficult. One of the major issues was that Currys significantly reduced their phone line staff, which led to a situation where customers could no longer get through to book valet services. This disruption in communication caused a massive drop in demand for our services, reducing our workload by an estimated 80%. The volume of work we had previously relied on was no longer there, and this steep decline in business was simply unsustainable for us.

To make matters worse, the retailer also decided to reduce the amount they were willing to pay us for each appliance serviced. This pay cut came at a time when we were already facing rising costs in various areas. The increasing costs of supplies, the rise in minimum wage, and escalating fuel prices were all contributing factors that made continuing to provide service for Currys increasingly difficult. We found ourselves in a situation where the costs of performing the services were outweighing the compensation we were receiving, and the financial model was no longer viable.

Given these challenges, we were forced to reassess our position and, ultimately, move on to other contracts and projects. The landscape had shifted dramatically, and it became clear that continuing our partnership with the retailer was no longer in the best interest of our business. Additionally, most customers who had previously been on care plans with the retailer started to cancel their agreements, citing not only the poor service they had experienced due to reduced staffing and availability but also the rising cost of living. For many, an oven clean, which was once considered a necessary service, had now become a luxury that they could no longer afford.

Why we stopped working with Currys PLC

As a result, we made the strategic decision to focus on new opportunities and expand into other sectors, ensuring the long-term sustainability of our business. While it was unfortunate that this particular partnership came to an end, it served as a valuable learning experience, reinforcing the importance of adaptability and finding new avenues for growth in an ever-changing market.
