Case Study: Garage Renovation
This case study showcases a garage refurbishment project we undertook to transform an underutilized space into a functional office while also ensuring an optimal environment for storing lithium-ion solar batteries. Since these batteries are highly sensitive to cold temperatures, it was crucial to insulate the area properly to prevent potential damage.
Project Scope and Objectives
The goal of this renovation was twofold: first, to create a comfortable and well-insulated office space, and second, to provide a controlled climate for safely storing lithium-ion solar batteries. The existing garage structure was not designed for such purposes, so significant modifications were required to improve insulation, electrical wiring, lighting, and overall functionality.
Renovation Process
1. Structural Enhancements
We began by constructing stud walls around the entire garage to create a sturdy framework for insulation and interior finishes. This step was essential in preparing the space for better temperature regulation and noise reduction.
2. Insulation Installation
To ensure the garage retained warmth, we installed insulation within the newly built stud walls. This addition significantly improved thermal efficiency, preventing excessive heat loss during colder months while maintaining a stable environment for the batteries.
3. Electrical Wiring and Plasterboarding
Once the insulation was in place, we proceeded with the electrical work. Wiring was carefully routed through the walls to accommodate office equipment, lighting, and other electrical needs. After completing the wiring, we installed plasterboard to create a smooth, finished surface.
4. Surface Finishing
Instead of traditional plastering, we opted for a more efficient approach. We filled all gaps and joints in the plasterboard with filler, ensuring a seamless look. After thoroughly sanding the surface, we applied multiple coats of high-quality paint, resulting in a professional and polished finish.
5. Lighting Installation
Given that the garage had a relatively low ceiling height, we selected a low-profile light fixture to maximize headroom. This provided sufficient illumination without making the space feel cramped.
6. Moisture Control Around the Window
To prevent condensation buildup from damaging the newly finished plasterboard walls, we took proactive measures around the window. By tiling the area, we created a moisture-resistant barrier that would protect against potential water damage and extend the longevity of the walls.
7. Flooring Installation
For the final touch, we installed an 18mm thick plywood subfloor, providing a stable and durable base. To enhance warmth and comfort, we laid carpeting over the plywood, creating a cosy office environment while also contributing to additional insulation.
Final Outcome
The completed renovation successfully transformed the garage into a functional and well-insulated office space, ensuring both comfort for everyday use and a suitable storage environment for the lithium-ion solar batteries. The combination of insulation, efficient electrical work, strategic lighting choices, moisture protection, and flooring upgrades resulted in a practical and aesthetically pleasing workspace.
